My Dear Parish,
We’re grieving the loss of Brother Marx Tyree this year as we celebrate Easter. This may sound strange at first, but if there is ever a good time to grieve, it’s during Easter.
The pain of losing someone we love can disorient us and cause us momentarily—and sometimes longer—to forget what we believe. But Easter-time, above all, is the time we remember that God is stronger than death and that we are all called not to die, but to live with God forever.
Death is a real pain. And it’s a pain we all have to suffer because of our belonging to the human race, a race that was created for life but had rejected God. Even though we rejected him, God didn’t want to let us get away without calling us back to him and offering us forgiveness. He was so intent on calling us back to himself that he sent his Son to show us he has forgiven us. By rising from the dead, he has shown us he is stronger than death and has eternal life prepared for those who believe in him.
Let’s celebrate the resurrection with great joy, even as we grieve. God’s plan is for Brother Marx and for all of us to end up like his Son, victorious over death, risen and delighting in the freedom of our heavenly Father’s house. May our Easter celebration strengthen our hope.
